When It's Time to Have Your Water Heater Inspected

Your hot water heater is responsible for giving you hot water whenever you need it in your home. If you go to take a hot shower and you can't get the water hot enough, you probably need to have your hot water heater checked. A hot water heater with a tank can last between 8 and 12 years and is more likely to break down the older it gets. When you don't have the hot water you need or you hear noises coming from your hot water heater, it's time to have a plumber come and investigate further.

If Water Leaks from Your Hot Water Heater

You may find a puddle in your basement coming from your hot water heater. This could be an issue with a valve that needs to be replaced. If the issue is due to corrosion in your tank, your plumber may be able to patch up the hole for now. If there is excessive corrosion, your plumber will recommend getting a new tank installed.

If Your Hot Water Is Discolored

Your hot water can turn a brownish color when you have an older tank. If the hot water tank becomes corroded on the inside, the rust will cause your hot water to turn color. Try the cold water too, as your water could be discolored if your town is flushing hydrants. If you identify your hot water tank as the culprit of the rust-colored water, you probably need a new tank.

If You Hear Banging Noises Coming from Your Hot Water Tank

When you hear a banging noise as your water heats up, this is usually due to sediment that has built up in your tank. You can flush the tank, removing the sediment that has built up inside. Once your tank is cleaned out, you should no longer hear the banging noises.

If Your Water Doesn't Get Hot Enough

If your water doesn't heat up like you want it to, this can be an issue with the thermostat, heating coils, or dip tube. Have your plumber check out your hot water heater to figure out why you don't have the hot water you need.
