How Small Problems with Your Plumbing Can Turn Into an Emergency

Posted on

When it comes to your plumbing system, it may not seem like such a big deal when a faucet leaks a little or the toilet seems to run a long time. Beyond the water that you are wasting every day, a leaking faucet can go from a slow drip to a burst faucet, causing water to spray all over. A toilet that is leaking can end up creating a flood in your bathroom, leaving a water-damaged floor in its wake. Slow-moving drains may not seem like a big deal, but this can lead to a total block in your main sewer line. When you hear strange noises coming from your plumbing system or bubbles are coming up from your toilet, it's time to call a plumbing service for help.

A Drain Clog That Seems Minor

While one clogged drain is no cause for alarm, you may notice that more than one drain in your home is going slow. If this is the case, you will need to have a plumber come and investigate further. When more than one drain is having a problem, you likely have a clog that is building in your main sewer line. Much of the time, this gets started because of tree roots that grow into the pipe, catching debris as it is flushed down your drains. A plumber needs to fix the problem, as drain cleaners and short plumbing snakes won't do the trick.

When You See Water Stains in the Ceiling

You might notice that you have a water stain in your ceiling and can't identify the source of the water. If it is from a drain, the leak will only occur when the water is running. If the leak is from a pipe, that pipe can burst and cause a flood in your home. If the pipe bursts, you'll need to get to the main water supply and shut it off immediately. While this is going to stop the flow of water from damaging your home further, you will need a plumber to come and take care of the issue before you can turn your water back on again.

Small leaks can waste gallons of water a day, while strange noises from your toilet as it flushes are a concern. Pay attention to slow drains, and if you smell odors coming from your drains, you probably have a clog in your system. Get help from a plumber early before you have a big mess.
